Hello! It’s Haru, a fashion nerd!
This season, we’ve started carrying
"Shuzo Matsuhashi."
The brand was launched this year by a designer
who honed their fashion expertise at various
domestic and international brands,
including LOEWE.
The 1st delivery was a huge hit,
with every item selling out.
Many of our regular customers have been
eagerly anticipating what this promising
new brand would release next.
Since it only started this year,
there are parts of the brand that feel like a "work in progress."
However, precisely because most of the brands we carry at sign
are already established, the appeal of
Shuzo Matsuhashi really stands out and pulls you in.
You know a brand before anyone else does,
and to top it off, this is their first collection.
As a fashion lover, I’m a sucker for that,
and I’m certain that when it grows into a BIG brand
in a few years, I’ll definitely be the guy saying,
“You know, I knew about them since their first collection, right?”
and flexing on everyone, haha.
As you’ve gathered, today I’m introducing
an item from Shuzo Matsuhashi,
one that I’ve been looking forward to receiving
for a long time.
The intro was a bit long, so let’s
get straight to the reveal.
Shuzo Matsuhashi
-Draped Shirt-Jacket in KP-
Shuzo Matsuhashi’s themes are
“Everyday Clothing” and “The Relationship Between Clothing and the Body.”
Drawing inspiration from garments rooted in daily life—
like workwear, nursing care clothing, and lingerie—
as well as everyday movements,
this shirt strongly reflects those philosophies.
It features a unique jacquard design
inspired by the pattern of kitchen paper
we use in our daily lives.
When I first discovered Shuzo Matsuhashi,
this was the piece that caught my eye immediately.
The atmosphere and styling in the LOOKbook
perfectly captured the brand's worldview, and
I was instantly hooked, thinking, "What on earth... is this shirt?!"
As I mentioned earlier,
Shuzo Matsuhashi finds inspiration in daily scenes,
and this shirt takes the pattern of kitchen paper—
an item that helps us in our daily lives—and
incorporates it into fashion.
That concept shines through subtly in other details,
serving as a bold accent.
The cuffs and collar design
mimic the ribbed finish
often seen on blousons.
According to the designer,
it was crafted with the conscious intent to
“change the impression of a familiar image
through a single idea,”
and I feel like this shirt was created by carefully
fitting together various pieces of patterns scattered throughout our daily lives.
Also, while researching nursing care clothing,
Mr. Matsuhashi spent a lot of time
thinking about neck openings and ease of movement.
Based on that, he consciously took a basic shirt
and intentionally altered its proportions and volume.
Here’s a bit of behind-the-scenes info I heard from the designer:
He purposely made the neck opening large, inspired by nursing clothing, and to highlight the difference, he layered another shirt underneath during the lookbook shoot.
As a fashion nerd, this is the kind of stuff I love most, haha.
Personally, the most compelling part of this shirt
is the fit.
The tight design is unusual for a Japanese brand and feels refreshing,
but it lacks the stiff, formal sensation of a traditional dress shirt,
retaining a softer, more relaxed impression.
Because of the tight fit, the use of materials, patterns,
and details like the ones inspired by nursing clothing
add a "change" through unseen elements.
By infusing a soft nuance into it,
it becomes a one-of-a-kind piece that is universally designed
but feels "somewhere different."
This is the type of item we haven’t really offered
at sign until now.
To be frank, I understand this is a niche item,
but because it reflects such strong personality
rather than aiming for mass appeal, it’s bound to resonate with many of you.
There is already only one piece left, so please come see it soon!
